Tulian Lake trek in Kashmir is a beautiful 32 km hike that goes from 2100 meters to 3700 meters in height. PAHALGAM, KASHMIR

Pahalgam is located in the Zanskar and Pir Panjal mountain ranges of the western Himalayas and is the starting point for many beautiful treks in Kashmir, including the Tulian Lake Trek. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to reach Pahalgam from the airport or Srinagar, covering a distance of 90 km. Pahalgam is a major tourist destination and a hub for adventure activities in the Kashmir Valley.

BAISARAN (MINI-SWIZERLAND)

The geography of Kashmir is unique compared to other parts of the Indian Himalayas, thanks to its distinctive mountain ranges that host beautiful green meadows, valleys, and hill stations. Pahalgam, a world-famous hill station, offers numerous options for easy day hikes, with Baisaran (also known as Mini Switzerland) being the most beautiful among them.

Mini Switzerland of Kashmir is located in the foothills of Mt. Katsal and is just 7 km from Pahalgam’s main market. The moderate climate of Pahalgam makes it one of the best hill resorts in India, and Baisaran is a top choice for a day hike from there. It is part of the Tulian Lake trek and offers stunning views reminiscent of the Alps, which is why it’s called Mini Switzerland.

Many tourists who visit Kashmir for leisure also visit Baisaran, either by walking or riding a horse from Pahalgam. This picturesque spot is perfect for photos and videos, with locals often adding charm by providing white pigeons and rabbits for pictures.

TULIAN LAKE TREK ROUTE

The Tulian Lake trek offers a captivating journey through the heart of Kashmir’s pristine landscapes. This trek combines natural wonders with challenging terrains, making it an unforgettable adventure. Starting in Pahalgam, about 95 kilometers from Srinagar City, trekkers ascend through enchanting meadows and dense forests to reach the mesmerizing Tulian Lake, situated at an elevation of 3,685 meters.
Local guides and trek organizers are invaluable, offering insights into the ever-changing trail conditions and ensuring smooth navigation through the scenic route. While there is no universal map for the trek, digital mapping apps and GPS devices can provide real-time location tracking, enhancing the trekking experience. Here is the route and important information you need to know before starting the hike:

Itinerary

• Drive Distance: 90 km from Srinagar to Pahalgam (3-4 hours)
• Trek Distance: 4.2 km to Deno Valley
• Trek Time: 3 hours
• Altitude Gain: 415 meters (2100 m to 2515 m)
• Description: Scenic drive followed by a trek to Deno Valley, immersing in nature’s wonders.

• Trek Distance: 10 km
• Trek Time: 6-8 hours
• Altitude Gain: 700 meters
• Description: Hike through lush forests to Baisaran (Mini Switzerland), then ascend to Kanimul campsite and traverse to Tulian Valley.

• Trek Distance: 4 km
• Trek Time: 3-4 hours
• Altitude Gain: 470 meters
• Description: Explore Tulian Valley and trek to Tulian Lake, experiencing moderate trails and boulder walks.

• Total Distance: 14 km
• Trek Time: 7-8 hours
• Altitude Loss: 1585 meters
• Description: Descend from the mountain ranges, passing through Baisaran, and return to Pahalgam. Drive back to Srinagar to conclude the trek.

IN MANDATORY ITEMS –

  1. Original and photocopy of government photo identity card. ID cards of either Aadhar card or passport will do. This is required by the forest department for your identification.
  1. Medical certificate: The medical certificate needs to be filled out by an MBBS doctor, without which the forest department will not issue permissions for your trek.

3 T-shirts: wear one T-shirt and carry two. Carry full-sleeved dry-fit T-shirts (preferably collared). These prevent your arms and neck from getting sunburnt. In the rarefied air on the trek, especially at high altitudes.

3 insulation layers:The highest altitude you reach on this trek is 13,200 ft. At these altitudes, it can get cold even in the middle of summer. You will need at least 3 insulation layERs for this trek. Two trek pants

GET FIT FOR THE TULIAN LAKE TREK

Jogging is indeed a fantastic routine to prepare for a trek. It targets the muscles you’ll use during trekking—your calves, glutes, and hamstrings—while also boosting your stamina gradually. Plus, it’s convenient since you don’t need any equipment or tools.

To achieve fitness for the trek using jogging, follow these steps:

  1. Start Jogging:
    • Begin jogging at least 4 days a week.
    • If you can’t run 5 km right away, start with 2 km and gradually increase to 5 km over 2-3 weeks.
  2. Increase Pace:
    • Once you can comfortably run 5 km, focus on increasing your pace gradually.
    • Aim to bring your time down to 5 km in less than 35 minutes.
  3. Consistency:
    • Maintain a consistent routine and ensure you can run 5 km in 35 minutes consistently for at least 2 weeks before the trek.
  4. Preparation Time:
    • This trek requires at least 6-8 weeks of preparation, but longer preparation is even better.
